PROTECTING CHILDREN FROM HIV/AIDS

22 year old Tselane lives in Lesotho. She is in the late stages of pregnancy. To get a medical examination at the next health care center she has to pass a high mountain chain for 10 km. There, she learns that she is HIV positive – like every fourth adult in Lesotho. The expectant mother is shocked. UNICEF supports the health care center where she is given medication immediately. Of course, Tselane worries about her unborn daughter. “I hope that I will survive with the medication”, the 22 year old says. “And that my baby will survive”.

6 month later, Tselane is overwhelmed with joy. Dintle was born – and she is HIV-negative. With the help of the supporters of the United Internet for UNICEF Foundation Tselane’s baby was protected from the deadly virus. Tselane abides to all of the delivery nurse’s instructions. As she was medicated in time, she can breastfeed her daughter: Dintle gets breast milk for six months.

We can reach an aids-free generation – for the first time in 30 years the numbers of new infections decreased. The United Internet for UNICEF Foundation was part of this huge success.

However, 1.000 girls and boys still become infected with the deadly virus every day – already in their mother’s womb, during birth or via unprotected breast feeding. Unfortunately, many mothers don’t even know that they are “positive”. Till this day, AIDS has taken 17 million mothers, fathers or even both parents.
